WAYS TO BUILD INNOVATION IN AN ORGANIZATION
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The main issue at my former employer was that the whole setting of organization was quite an innovation killer. Since my JD was basically related to creative work but the bureaucratic environment doesn’t support it hence leading to less productivity. Also there was lack of motivation among employees to outperform others.
SOLUTIONS:
In a kind of organization where most work is related to creative side and things need not to be just in sync but abreast of the industry trends to keep up with the ever evolving scenarios, following solutions should be in consideration:
Entrepreneurial Approach:
They should have an entrepreneurial culture in the organization so all the employees own their projects and not just do it because it’s their duty. Rather they should be excelling more and coming up with unique ideas and be more open to the seniors about it.
Informal Environment:
Since my department handles all the creative projects for on screen and off screen, there should be an informal environment and no unnecessary restrictions should be there on employees in order to hone their innovative and creative skills. If they are leaving the office late and giving extra hours they should be allowed to reach office late the next morning so they can be fresh and not lethargic.
20 Percent Time:
Just like in Google, downtime should be promoted so that employees take part in other projects and not just do the routine tasks. It is very important to do the work out of the usual stuff so that more innovative productions can be made.
Rewarding Successful Innovation and Creative Projects:
In order to solve the issue of internally demotivated employees, financial rewards as well as morale lifting rewards should be given. Also bi-annual competitions should be promoted among employees and they should be given benefits for that so all employees feel more connected to each other and an atmosphere of healthy competition is created which eventually leads to motivated attitudes of employees pushing them to perform extra miles.
