Forming the southern end to the mile long historical Dadabhai Naoroji Road the Flora Fountain is an exquisite example of modern day architecture and sculpture. Built in 1960, it was named after a Roman goddess, Flora, termed to be the goddess of flowers and the season of spring. This water fountain consists of a statue of the goddess, placed in the center of the fountain, along with four other mythological figures. The monument is well maintained by the BMC, despite of being situated in a busy business district. Hawkers and vendors are found circling around the structure in the day selling just about everything under the tropical sun. But the beautiful Flora, yet manages to retain her serene composure and is indeed inscribed on the World Heritage List. Tourists who come to visit south Mumbai never seem to forget to explore this beautiful monument because of its extravagant construction, lush gardens and the ‘fountain light’ show in the evening. The flora fountain indeed can be termed as a major part of South Mumbai’s architectural landmarks.
