United Nations General Assembly’s Latest Resolution: Russia’s Aggression Against Ukraine
On December 17, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution regarding human rights violations in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
This document, for the first time, described Russia’s aggression as a “war of aggression.”
The resolution condemned crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, including the unlawful detention of Ukrainian civilians, torture, abuse, and discrimination against residents of the temporarily occupied territories.
Most notably, the UN formally labeled Russia’s actions as a “war of aggression against Ukraine.”
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized: “The adoption of this resolution demonstrates that the international community unequivocally condemns the crimes committed by Russian occupiers.
Every act of violence and human rights abuse will be duly assessed and punished.”
This resolution was supported by 81 countries, with 80 abstaining and 14 opposing it.
It’s unusual for a UN resolution to see as many as 80 abstentions, highlighting significant hesitation among member states.
