Some people may believe that, but it’s not likely to be true. Iran received 80 Tomcats and even if lack of parts grounded some of the fleet, especially initially, they had the ability to scavenge parts from those not in service to field quite a number of operational fighters. I also think we in the West often discount Iranian technical capabilities. They’ve been able to keep in service many aircraft and systems that would have normally been retired from lack of parts decades ago. The truth is the Iranian not only kept their F-14s in service, they used them to great effect in the Iran-Iraq war where their capabilities were overwhelming.
