Walk With Me…

This is me on Tybee Island (the beach near Savannah, GA) and can you guess who took this picture? My little cousin.

Long story short, I asked my little cousin to take my picture on the pier and then I offered to take hers in return, while we walked around the beach and talked. I asked my cousin about how they’re being treated, if they were looking forward to their new school and just let them talk about whatever excites them. This particular vacation I planned to be wasted (please no judgments) but I ended up spending time with my family (big and small) who are now in different phases of their life (middle school, college grads etc).

I can’t really remember middle school but I will tell you that I started middle school in a new city away from my family, I played basketball for a season and made a couple friends so I can still relate (or try to relate) to my little cousins new chapter. I also did some of this to show them how to be a friend and to also let them know they can still come to me (even if I’m miles away).

I’ve never really had anyone try to be a friend to me (without an ulterior motive looking back) and the couple of people whom I thought would be there ultimately made me walk away or they walked away when they couldn’t have their way (go figure). I would try to work out issues and they’d blow up or the situation would blow up.

Unfortunately, as an adult, I’ve found way more mean girls than nice women. One particular person most recently, whom I’ve talked about on my podcast, went way overboard and crossed over into some dangerous territory. I tried to reach out to resolve an issue (with just this person) and they in return stated that they had been in discussion with other people regarding me and used this to attack me.

The unfortunate part is that everyone involved had the opportunity to talk to me and I don’t get down like that. I’m the type of person who will reach out to you individually and try to talk BUT lesson learned. *Please note I’ve told this story several times because I feel there is a lesson in it for all of us NOT to make someone look bad but to show people how they look.

After a lot of soul searching and therapy/counseling at this time I do not wish to repair any of those relationships from my past (I talked about this in Broken Things). I have actually had to create a safe zone for myself. This applies to family too. I may not get along with all my family or agree with their lifestyles, but the kids are innocent and they model our behavior.

Let’s jump back to my picture (at the beginning and to my point)...

Yes, I’m looking fairly thick and my romper is stuck to my thighs. No, she didn’t get a good angle and I’m not really posing BUT I said all this to say: Nice girls are made the same way as mean girls. Pay attention.
