Is fitness simply shedding pounds? The answer is no.

Last week, I had the opportunity to present about CrossFit to a group of senior management at the advertising agency I work for, as part of our Dentsu Aegis Network Wellness Program. Just like any presentation, I’ve put together a few slides. But this time, I followed Simon Sinek’s approach and started with the Why, and using only rich photos and no texts.

I kicked off the presentation by introducing myself. At work, I’m an Account Manager of a programmatic agency, but outside of it, I’m known to many as a coach and a business owner. I specifically told them that I’m not here to sell gym memberships (laugh), but genuinely have a passion for why and what I do outside of work, which was why my partners and I decided to open up a facility in Hong Kong to inspire and share what we love. I kept the content simple and decided not to overwhelm the audience with too many scientific terms.

#1. Productivity. At any organization, it’s important to be productive and efficient. When you exercise, it increases the blood flow to the brain, driving more awareness and creating more energy, keeping you from falling asleep at work! It also improves our cardiovascular health, which leads to better endurance and stamina mentally, meeting the long hours and demands from our clients. Ultimately, as one is healthier, we’re happier, win win.

#2. Collaboration. There’s no “I” when you work in an organization, every member plays a crucial role, what are our strengths and weaknesses, what’s our strategy? Team workouts can help build camaraderie across the organization. It can also breakdown the corporate hierarchy, encouraging greater collaboration and team engagement.

#3. Measurable. What are our client’s objectives and how do we measure success? Everything we do in CrossFit is measurable, just like how KPIs are set, did we meet the client’s goal, exceed or under-deliver? From a physical and mental state, are we seeing less sick days being taken, are our staff happier, are we seeing more energy and productivity from the team? These are things we can observe to make sure what we implement today leads to a better tomorrow.

I finished off the presentation of how team workouts can help and finally led to what CrossFit is. Although I’m not sure whether our management will move forward with this program, but I tried and made 10 more people aware of this. Now I extend this to you, it doesn’t have to be CrossFit, it could be rock climbing, bubble soccer, basketball, as long as it has a level of team engagement, it’ll work, trust the process.
