When it comes to gardening, the thing you very often forget to consider when you start is how to deal with your yard waste. This is why if you can build several pits of compost for different use, it will be a blessing for your landscape and your wallet.

Just before the fall last year, i realized that the lawn of the yard would be healthier if we would make the effort to pick up the grass. So i started to dig directly in the ground a compost pit to take care of this waste. Yes you could bag this waste and ask the waste truck to come pick it for you but, the thing is that they compost this waste, so why not do it yourself on a smaller process.

The pit must be a little deep so that it helps the natural process of decomposition of the organic waste. The advantage of this method is that it creates no odors of any kind and after a few month of care ( yes compost need care ) you will have a homemade dirt of quality that you can reuse on your flower beds or even in you yard to fix it and nourish it. Compost is a natural fertilizer.

It is better to make a compost pit for specific waste. I made a pit for the leaves of the trees and a pit for the veggies and fruit waste. Not everything goes in the compost, you must make sure to not throw away too acidic waste and things that have a fast process of decomposition.

The advantage of digging a pit directly in the ground, is that it will attract worms. They are a blessing for your compost and as long as you feed them with your waste, they will be your companions and will do the work for you.

Don’t spend money on those compost pit unless you have a very small yard or no yard at all.

If you are concerned about having this in your landscape and that it does not look pretty, you still can make an edge of flowers like marigolds around it so it can look perfectly nice from a distance.

Your landscape will improve rapidly, your grass will look greener than your neighbors that don’t pick up their grass. You will be able to feed your plants with homemade dirt and you will not have to go buy some.

It is extra work but if you care about the quality of your landscape the result will be here.
