How much traffic I got from Designer News after being #1 for >24h

+ Designer News Audience Analytics

My recent project Designer News Statistics became really popular on Designer News. It got 147 points and become second most popular thing ever posted on Designer News. It stayed on the 1st place on DN for more then 24 hours.

Nobody (until now) published data about traffic he got from DN as opposed to Hacker News or Product Hunt.

Bloggers, entrepreneurs, designers are trying to promote themself and get more exposure by posting their projects on DN. So now you’ll know what traffic you could expect.

In addition this data could be considered as a statistical sample of DN community.

How much traffic did I get and what’s the best time to post on DN

In two days my project got 5,978 unique users from Designer News, 66% of them (3,948 users) visited in first 5 hours after publishing.

10% of the traffic used visited the website with mobile, 3% with tablet.

The post was published at 6:50 AM

I have not enough data to predict the perfect time to publish on DN, but after analyzing the data I have it seems like publishing at 9:00 a.m. San Francisco time is a good idea, which is different from Hacker News (9 to 10 AM EST) or Facebook (1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.), but pretty close to Twitter’s prime-time (1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. ET).

It seems that DN have less content published on weekends, so I can assume that publishing on weekends is less effective if your goal is to get much traffic.

Users Location

Obviously most of the users are from US

US Traffic Segmentation by States

The traffic locations in US pretty much fits the top states with most progressive startup scenes.

Browsers

62% of users are Mac users, 19% — Windows users.

Update: Allan Grinshtein, CEO of LayerVault and creator of Designer News commented this data:

Despite receiving a bunch of votes, the posts seemed to be much less popular in traffic-wise than other content. The content itself was great, but it received such a small fraction of total daily clicks that it may be worth considering how we segment types of posts.

So if any of you have data about traffic you’ve got from DN join the discussion.
