Do you know what is the difference between SOOW and SJOOW portable cord? What does that extra ‘J’ mean?

The letters SOOW denote particular properties of the cable:
S for Service
OO for Oil-resistant insulation and Oil-resistant jacket
W for Weather and Water resistance.
The SOOW Cord is made from strands of flexible Class copper conductors. Depending on the size of your cable, the number of conductors inside can range anywhere from 2 to 60.

SJOOW is a type of portable cord, making it a very flexible piece of equipment for a variety of applications.
Much of what SJOOW portable cord is all about can be learned when you break down what each letter in its name stands for:
S = Service
J = Junior
OO = Insulation that is oil-resistant
W = Moisture and weather resistant
The SJOOW cable is a thermoset cable, which means it features a very heavy-duty rubber jacket around the copper wires inside. This jacket is made of CPE (chlorinated polyethylene elastomer) and is resistant to a lot of things — water, oil, sun and heat — which is what helps allow the SJOOW cable to be used for both indoor and outdoor applications

SOOW and SJOOW Differences

SJOOW cord is rated for 300 volts, while SOOW cord is rated 600 volts.Both types of service cord are resistant to abrasion, ozone, sunlight, chemicals, oil and have been approved for submersion in water.

SOOW and SJOOW Differences

The physical difference between the two cord types is jacket thickness, making the practical difference a matter of voltage. The SOOW cable has a thicker jacket, so it can accommodate up to 600 volts. The thinner SJOOW can only be used in applications up to 300 volts, and that’s why it has the ‘J’ for “junior service” in its name.

SJOOW and SOOW cable both may be used for portable tools and equipment, portable appliances, and small motors. However, SOOW’s greater voltage rating means the cable is functional in a wider range of applications, including construction equipment, cranes, hoists, and other industrial machinery.

Because SOOW cord can be used in a wider variety of applications, it’s usually offered in a greater selection of gauges and conductor counts than you’ll find with SJOOW cord.
