I think you are right! That risk is certainly there. But is that risk significantly higher than when time and materials are used as a unit of estimation and invoicing?
As mentioned in the article, story points are a mechanism to estimate the size, risk, uncertainty, etc. of the work itself, instead of time spent. I think that helps creating a healthy conversation between the PO and the rest of the team about estimations. After all, the PO can always perform a ‘double check’ by comparing with earlier estimations of comparable work.
And yes—trust is foundational for a team to be succesful. Based on the experience we gained with executing the contract, trust grows slowly (but automatically) over time—assuming that the team is providing good enough precise and reliable estimations.
