He was going back to a place he’d hoped he would never see again. His childhood home. He didn’t have a lot of good memories here. Heck, he can’t even remember any good memories here. Just flashbacks of pain and suffering.

But he’s not here for that.

He’s here to get back the most precious thing to him in the world that he had to leave behind. It’s been 6 years and he’s still thinking about it.

Now, however, he can go back to this place that he thought was in his past forever. His dad was dead and for whatever reason, he left the house to him. The son that left and ran away. He doesn’t know what his dad was thinking.

“Hey there, Mitch. Decided to show your mug here, huh?”

“John. Good to see you.”

“Is it?” This was his younger brother John. The brother he left behind when he ran away 6 years ago. “You left. Without a thought.”

“I had to, John. I thought about coming back to get you, but I… I wasn’t strong enough.”

“Tsk, so now that the literal monster in my life is dead, you’ve decided to what, return and save me from a lifeless body?”

The young man named John walked into the dreaded house they both used to call home.

“No thanks, Mitch. Just come in and sign the papers. I’m leaving as soon as that’s done. Just like you did all those years ago.”

Mitch looked down on the ground. Turned out it was too late to pick up that precious thing.

Thanks for reading! Flash Fiction Friday is when I get to flex my fiction writing muscle for at least five minutes a day by using this wonderful website called The Most Dangerous Random Prompt Generator. It’s five minutes of writing chaos and I love it.

I’m not eligible for the Medium Partner Program due to my place of residence. If you liked what you read, consider leaving a tip! Every little bit helps.

Follow me on Bluesky! I don’t know what I’m doing there yet, but it’s fun to figure it out.
