Get started on leaving your comfort zone!

So leaving your comfort zone sucks — I know!

Its basically as if someone comes by and takes a shit on your selfesteem and instead of hiding away in a pit you have to keep going

This is how it feels everytime I leave my comfort zone, sometimes not as bad and sometimes worse. It seems crazy to ever want to willingly leave that zone. Leaving it however can be very extremely beneficial and I can prove it!

I will give you three reasons why leaving your comfort zone is actually the best thing you can do!

Leaving your comfort zone is the best thing you can do!

So I recently decided to make a pretty drastic career decision. Basically I stopped being a Business Person and decided to take a gap year to learn programming! This takes me out of my comfort zone by light years! It would be fair to say that I actually couldn’t be farther away from my comfort zone.

I am working on a topic that I am completely unfamiliar with - to be honest I have no idea what the hell I am doing, with people who all seem to get something I can’t get my head around. A lot of the time, I feel like the stupidest person in the room, which brings me to the first good reason why getting out of your comfort zone is the best thing you can do.

Learn that you are not as smart as you might think!

Its easy to build an ego when you are working a job that you are the best in. Don’t get me wrong being confident in your abilities is a great thing and having a job that reflects that is just awesome, but having a giant ego is very dangerous. A big ego will lead to very bad decision making, it will lead to underestimating others (may it be competitors, colleagues …) and it will lead (should you ever end up in a leadership position) to terrible leadership.

Getting out of that comfortable, ‘you are the best environment’ every once in a while is very healthy.

Sometimes you just need a reminder that for everything you know there is just so much more you don’t!

And yes maybe you feel like the stupidest person in the room, but you also get to look at problems from a new perspective! This has been eyeopening for me, not only do I understand the technical side in a company better now, I also understand the people better, that I usually would have not gotten the chance to get to know.

Look at problems from from different angles and finally understand the big picture!

I now understand how someone with a different skill and background can have a different view on a situation. I get it now! I get you! This is amazing! I can look at problems from different angles! I can understand different views! I now appreciate diversity even more!

When you are tackling a problem it is incredibly helpful to get the different angles, to be able to look at it through different eyes and to know a diverse number of people that can help you if you get stuck.

Become more relaxed and confident in stressful situations!

Finally, by getting out of your comfort zone and feeling like the stupidest person in the room you actually get more confident in stressful situations. You will learn how to deal with unknown and uncomfortable situations and become more and more relaxed when stressful things happen. Ever since I changed my career I have slowly (pay attention, you might not notice it right away) become more confident and relaxed in situations that used to stress me out. For example, I am not very comfortable meeting new people -I mean who really is right? Well I am still not as open as I would like to be, but I have noticed that I am having not as hard of a time approaching new people anymore.
