I also have a GoPro Hero 2 and it struggles in low light.

Well I also mount it on my truck when I go backroading. If you are suggesting using a phone upwards of around $300 for doing time lapse videos, I may just look into a low to mid grade DSLR.
Do you have any of your videos uploaded anywhere?
