Don’t Let Stress and Anxiety Take Over — Simple Ways to Keep Them at Bay

  1. Take a Breath: Studies have shown that deep breathing can help reduce stress levels. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold it for a few seconds, then exhale slowly through your mouth. When taking deep breaths like these regularly, you’ll eventually get into a breathing pattern that calms you down. We call it diaphragmatic breathing because it helps you breathe with your diaphragm — the large muscle in your abdominal area that moves when you inhale or exhale.
  2. Practice Gratitude: Acknowledging what you have, be it a job, health, or family. We find grateful people to be happier than those who aren’t. Not only that, but people who express gratitude also experience less stress in their lives.
  3. Exercise & Watch Your Favourite TV Show: Turn off all sources of stress, exercise, and watch your favourite TV show. Just be sure you shouldn’t spend too much time in front of a screen! After one hour, you’ll want to take a break. Studies conducted by Harvard Medical School have also shown that exercising can quickly improve mood. And finally, watching your favourite TV show is an excellent way to release endorphins and relieve stress.
  4. Check-In With Yourself: Ask yourself how you’re feeling. Do you notice anxiety seeping into your everyday life? Missing out on things because of constant worry? Or does your mood depend on how well your day is going? So please, if this is the case, give yourself some time to process your thoughts. It might be time for some quick ways to reduce stress and anxiety.
  5. Avoid Overwhelm: When there are a lot of tasks that you need to complete, it’s challenging to keep up. But staying managed and delegating tasks can make all the difference in dealing with your mental health.
  6. Get Sleep: Many people don’t realise that sleep deprivation can be as much of a trigger for anxiety as trauma or stressful events. Getting enough sleep will help you stay calm and collected in stressful situations.
  7. Laugh At Life: Make sure you take some time every day to laugh at life. A positive attitude toward life’s challenges can be developed through a few moments of laughter, which reduces stress. Just 15 minutes of daily laughter can make a massive difference in your overall well-being.
  8. Surround Yourself With People You Love: If you’re not feeling great about yourself, try calling up a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Venting your troubles helps them get off your chest, making you feel lighter.
  9. Get Outside: Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Taking a jog in nature or spending time in a nearby park can instantly boost your mood.
  10. Change Habits: When you have trouble relaxing, your anxiety may stem from specific patterns you’ve developed over time. Make it a goal to work on a tiny habit each day, whether drinking more water or eating healthier meals.
  11. Something Extra - Stop Doing One Thing at a Time: Whether it’s driving home from work, running errands, or picking up dinner after a long day of work, many people multitask these daily tasks. Even though it may be more convenient in the short term, doing everything at once can increase your stress levels. When engaged in two or more activities simultaneously, such as talking on the phone while driving, your brain has to divide its attention between the two tasks. It takes away from being fully present in whatever you’re doing and increases your risk of an accident. Instead of trying to do over one thing at once, make a conscious effort to focus on each task individually. You might even find that some jobs take less time when you give them 100 per cent of your attention!
