Dear Apostle…
Dear Apostle, I write you from the comfort of my bedroom, with my legs crossed and the usual bland expression across my face. Now while it might seem like I’m just casually relaxing, there’s really stress ina me chest. Although it’s quite a bother, I decided within myself, “Apostle will hear of this. I will tell Apostle about this.” There’s a buzz of things on the internet which has left me appalled and vexed, with a permanent grimace on my inner face.
It’s quite sad and appalling that in this golden age of technological advancement where cars seemingly transform and AIs now speak their own language, we still have to have issues dealing with the urges of our baser instincts. Yup, domestic violence and rape are topics of discussion as they’ve always been since biblical times. It’s disturbing because every time we seemed to have cleared air concerning the rules and regulations of this issues, something happens that hands humanity an L to show our failure.
We live in an age where a lack of understanding of consent has promoted rape culture in our society. Simple Yes means Yes and No means No is not as simple as it sounds. A casual walk through the rural markets of Lagos is all you need to be appalled at the state of moral decadence of society. While this thing goes both ways, male and female, it’s the male faction that we have a bigger bone to contend with because well, men are scum. Catcalls, whistles and snide remarks are just but a few things you have to endure as a lady when you step into the streets. Where this male sense of entitlement that makes us look at women like a piece of meat comes from, I’m yet to understand. It’s only an animal who keeps chasing another one for sex even when they have clearly refused. We who claim to have advanced have to behave like advanced beings and not rely on our animal urges. It’s actually bad that there are also enabling-ass niggas that serve as backup singers to the perpetrators of this act. People who say, “I know what he did was bad BUT she shouldn’t have…”. Like Lord Eddard Stark said to Jon Snow, anything that comes before a BUT is horseshit. It’s simple; when a person says No, it’s common courtesy to respect yourself and desist from the act. And nobody is your sex doll to meet your sexual desires. Sex should be a mutual thing.
On domestic violence, it’s crazy that someone you claim to love and break bread with becomes an object of suffering at your hands. In whatever form, physical and emotional, domestic violence is evil.
All these things go hand in hand to show that humanity still has a long way to go. However, through enlightenment and proper punishment for those who continue to perpetrate these acts, I believe we can progress.
Yours sincerely,
A concerned citizen.
