The rich man, the poor man & you…
What is the difference between the rich man and the poor man? At first glance one will see their clothing and their attire. Keep looking and one will see their homes and cars, their heritage, their families & relationships. On the outside there are many extremes but all too often people take things at face value. If one looks long enough they will eventually look past all the exterior things and start to examine the man, himself. What is it really that makes one man rich and another man poor?
Does a nice house make a man rich? Or does a man have a nice house because he is rich?
One is not rich because of his nice house, a person can afford a nice house because they are rich. A rich man can choose to have a nice house. Just like anyone can investigate what makes this house so nice, anyone can investigate what makes this man rich.
One practical way to understand what anyone can do to become rich is to reverse engineer what a rich man does. To do this one should start with observation. Napoleon Hill did this to create his acclaimed book Think & Grow Rich along with countless other works that paved the foundation for a proven science to get rich. If one can actually suspend all judgement and observe those around them they can see how this works.
Along with observing the things a rich person has, it is just as easy to observe the things that they do. Habits play a critical part in determining where one ends up. These habits are easily identified by the observer. It’s easy to see if someone starts their day early, schedules their day efficiently and spends time with influential people. This is a great place to start, however what drives people to do these things? Rich people have habits that make them rich. This is the real reason people that acquire money tend to continue to acquire it and those that do not never do. The people that do acquire money quickly and lose it do so because the habit did not take root. All anyone needs to do is create the same habits as the rich. It can be very difficult to change habits just by willpower alone.
Habits are formed from our belief system that we develop as children. To sum it up somewhere between the ages of 0–7 you had an experience — maybe a parent said “Money is the root of all evil.” Their angry emotion formed an impression on you that money was bad. The subconscious takes over and creates a negative belief around money. Every time you acquire money there is a part of you that feels bad about it. The subconscious belief is going to undermine what you want. On the contrary if as a child you experience a parent say “Money is liquid, it is energy stored in paper, that energy can be used for great purposes. You can feed your family and friends, with money you can buy comforts, with comfort comes creativity, with creativity comes revolutions that change the world…” your belief system will support you every time you acquire money. It will also support you spending it to create wonderful things. This is the difference in the beliefs and thinking of the poor versus the rich person.
If you are trying to acquire more money in your life start with your beliefs. Close your eyes and try to remember everything you’ve ever been told about money. What feeling do you get if someone gives you money? Do you feel guilt, appreciation or some other emotion? If you have $100 extra at the end of the week do you spend it, save it or invest it? These are all clues to how you feel about money. Remember previous conversations you’ve had about money — was it about the lack of it, or the abundance of it? Whatever the answer is, it only serves to tell you where you are today. If you are reading this, chances are you want more. So simply rewrite your memories, rewrite your beliefs. Here is a short video I put together on the power of thought that can help you to do this.
It’s that simple! Change the narrative to something like — “Money is a form of creative energy that I can put to work for me. It can be used for so much great in this world. When I have money I use it wisely. Money comes easily to me and I deserve an abundance of it.” If you are like most of us you probably have told yourself hundreds or thousands of time the story you remember from years ago. This means you are going to have to tell yourself the new story many times for you to break the old belief so keep at it. You’ve been doing what you have been doing for years and it will take some time to do something new. Be persistent! I know firsthand because I went from having nothing but debt to being a multimillionaire in just 3 years!
Knowing how to change your thought patterns applies to more than matters of money. Your beliefs effect every area of your life. This is ultimately why someone with lots of money may have trouble with love and vice versa. So no matter what area you want to improve you can trace this back to the moments you formed the belief and rewrite it! By literally rewriting your history you send yourself on a new trajectory for the future. You are and you get what you think about. So don’t wait, get started now, only you can change your circumstance.
