Although both India and China share a cultural history of about 1500 years with evidences ranging from great Buddhist monk Xuan Zang who travelled to India in the 7th century, collected the Buddhist texts and returned to China spending his life translating those religious texts , with India establishing diplomatic relations with China after PM Nehru’s visit to China in 1954 , China has always betrayed India’s trust be it its infiltration in Indian territory ,blocking its entry in NSG in 2016 to extending its unconditional support to Pakistan which resulted in cross border terrorism in India. Recently 2017 saw the military confrontation of both sides at Doklam , a strategically important region for India’s access to north eastern states via Chicken Neck corridor. Also it would have compromised Bhutan’s security as well.
China is literally dumping its finished goods like steel in India to finish domestic producers while India doesn’t have a large market in China.

China’s Master Plan : Salami Technique + Divide and Conquer
China plans to reconstruct world order with its Belt and Road Initiative, already started to influence South Asian countries with its capital and attract the already infrastructure deficit countries and later trapping them in a vicious circle of debt as its policies are not transparent. It plans to influence India’s neighbors , affecting India’s relation with them and thereby choking India diplomatically without directly engaging in an open conflict.
Nepal: After Nepal blamed India for the economic blockade in 2015, it signed various trade and transit treaties(including oil treaty)with China. China is developing both roadways and railways in Nepal. Moreover China became 2nd internet provider in Nepal breaking India’s monopoly there.
Myanmar & Bangladesh: China stepped in to negotiate the Rohingyas issue between Myanmar and Bangladesh, which should have been done by India, instead it sidelined itself. Recently, China won bid for 3 oil fields in Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka: Hambantota port development tender earlier given to India went to China after India refused, officially handed 70% shares of the port to China after it failed to make payments on the debt it had taken. Though China confirmed the port is strictly for commerce yet India was outraged after Chinese nuclear submarine docked at the port.
Maldives: It removed the Indian company GMR to develop the airport rather gave the tender to China, refused to participate in Indian Navy exercise MILAN and is irked with Indian intervention during the emergency there all of which point towards the China 1st policy it has began to follow. Recently China-Maldive Friendship Bridge was developed by China connecting 2 islands of Maldives ( Capital city Male to airport ).
Iran: Iran keen to join China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC) which is a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative(BRI), a blow to India which is developing Chabahar port there(golden gateway to Afghanistan), a project to counter CPEC and affect its relation with Iran, India’s top crude oil supplier.
Afghanistan: CPEC is being extended to Afghanistan with the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan and Taliban emerging as emerging power.

Belt and Road Initiative

China‘s intention to establish a network of Chinese military and commercial facilities in littoral states of Indian Ocean as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, already started by establishing a Military base in Djibouti and now plans another one in Gwadar in Pakistan. All this doctrine of Chinese presence in Indian Ocean has been given the name of String of Pearls.

In my next post I would write different approaches India must adopt and use to restrain China’s growing ambition of becoming world super power.
