Media Coverage of the 2017 Kenyan Election

I’d like to commend the Kenyan Media, From a very naive examination of just over 400,000 global news article headlines and summaries I’ve saved up, The coverage seems quite a bit balanced.

Uhuru Kenyatta (seemingly zero bias):

I found 2968 articles from far back as july, 2016. Of these

  • 32% were positive, 970
  • 42% were neutral, 1291
  • 26% were negative, 807

Local News headlines (from Kenya) see him as:

  • negative: 786/ 34%
  • neutral: 898/39%
  • positive: 612/27%

International headlines:

  • negative: 184/23%
  • neutral: 393 /51%
  • positive: 195/25%

Raila Odinga (a little more negative):

I found 1802 articles from far back as July, 2016. Of these

  • 25% were positive, 455
  • 35% were neutral, 654
  • 40% were negative, 713

Local News headlines (from Kenya) see him as:

  • negative: 641/ 39%
  • neutral: 568/35%
  • positive:418/26%

International headlines:

  • negative: 72/41%
  • neutral: 66/38%
  • positive: 27/21%

Kalonzo Musyoka ( skewing a bit more to the positive):

I found 494 article headlines from far back as july, 2016. Of these:

  • 35% were positive, 174
  • 37% were neutral, 185
  • 27% were negative, 135

Local News headlines (from Kenya) see him as:

  • negative: 119/ 26%
  • neutral: 162/36%
  • positive: 174/38%

International headlines (very small sample):

  • negative: 11/28%
  • neutral: 12/30%
  • positive: 16/41%

All in all it seems quite balanced, but I’m no statistician, and while I’ve only included some of the most prominent politicians I’m interested in the politics so I’ll add more.

All the headlines have been gathered from an aggregator I’ve been running since around July 2016 and can be seen here: https://news.qwangu.com
