As technology intrudes every aspect of our lives, it is no wonder that solving crimes has become almost high-tech in its advances. Modern advances in technology have led to numerous crimes being solved easily that would have been dismissed as a cold case decades ago. ‘Forensic science’ is one of the applications which I believe, has gained maximum advantage with the help of several technologies.

From crime scene to courtroom, forensics plays a vital role in the criminal justice system. Mention “forensics” to most people these days and their first reaction will be to think of Crime Scene Investigator CSI, which is true, but apart from that, there are forensic technologies that could aid investigators in solving crimes handled.

Why are Forensic Technologies needed?

A fact which cannot be denied that criminals are also becoming smart and using technology to disguise their illegal dealings, and to move funds across jurisdictions and around the world. Their operations are complex and they deploy significant resources to evade detection. But, no worries, forensic professionals respond to these actions smartly and they identify Information exchanged on a global scale and stored electronically (Electronically Stored Information or “ESI”). Once ESI has been captured, stored and properly preserved in a secure manner, analysis of it can begin.

Forensic technology is an essential component of every financial investigation, and the vast majority of antagonistic, non-contentious and fraud-related litigation. Forensic scientists not only solve for murders and other violent crimes, but for chemical attacks, cybercrimes and any other acts of violence that come with the modern territory.

How Technology Has Shaped Forensic Science

The initial days of forensic science must have been somewhat frustrating for detectives with a lack of options, outside of their own skills of inquiry and a trustworthy magnifying glass. Modern wonders such as DNA analysis or image enhancement technologies have made forensic science much easier in one respect. Here are some of the major advances made in forensic technology along with other important milestones in forensics-

• Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)

• DNA Profiling

• Digital Forensic Software

• Biometric and Fingerprint Analysis

• Cyber Hacking

• Forensic Ballistics

• Video Spectral Comparator 2000

Forensic Technologies Market Scenario

Presently, the global market for forensic technologies is flourishing, owing to the increasing crime rate, government efforts to stay attentive against growing acts of terrorism, sophistication of crime and demand for forensic services.
