Exactly. I just commented somewhere else (and didn’t leave a link) about something I always try to base any discussion on. I have a friend who is on the polar opposite side of the spectrum with many political issues but we can have a civil discussion and come away from it as friends.

He is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life, and yet he believes with all of his heart that, with some sociological or political issues, he is right and I am wrong.

My take-away is this — when the smartest person I ever met has a different opinion than my own there must be a very good reason for it. Because of that when ANYONE speaks up, rationally and civilly, on any issue it is my obligation to listen and consider their position.

Maybe, just maybe, they are right and I am the one who is wrong.
