I like your perspective.

I relate it to Machiavellian principles, which, in its purest essence, is as follows:

“In order to be a good and kind leader, you must first understand the bad and wicked leader. You must see why he does what he does, how he does what he does, and become capable of doing the same. It is only through this full understanding, and creating this deep contrast, that a just leader can reach his full potential and not be taken advantage of.”

So the same can apply here. In order for us to be good, we should attempt to understand that which we are not.
