Beginners guide to end of tenancy cleaning…

What is end of tenancy cleaning?
End of tenancy cleaning refers to the specialist deep cleaning of your rented flat or house before when you move out of the property. It’s also called move out cleaning, tenancy cleaning and just deep cleaning.
Do I need it?
Essentially whether or not you will need to carry out end of tenancy cleaning will depend largely on your tenancy agreement.
Most modern tenancy agreements state that you need to have your rented flat or house professionally cleaned before you move you. (Your agent or landlord will be able to help you with this if you are unsure). Bear in mind that the deposit protection scheme mydeposits.co.uk has cited general or professional cleaning as one of the leading reasons for deposit dispute between landlords and tenants.
What’s included?
Just getting a cleaning company to carry out a clean won’t cut it. You need a professional deep clean that adheres to the inventory clerks strict cleaning checklists to ensure that you get your deposit back. Even if there isn’t an inventory check out, the landlord or agent may have their own cleaning lists.
To give you an idea, the kitchen and bathroom should cover:
> Kitchen
- Oven
- Fridge/Freezer
- Appliances
- Work surfaces
- Floor
- Kitchen cupboards
> Bathroom
- Remove limescale from taps, tiles, shower screens and showerhead
- Polish all taps
- Clean & descale toilet bowl
Do it myself?
We’d advise against it, especially if you’re rented property is managed through an agent. Although, if you have a private rental and the landlord is understanding you could give it a go. If you are going to do it yourself, make sure you read this post which will help you out!
We’d recommend that you get the professionals in as they use specialist cleaning chemicals & equipment for the cleaning and it can take up to half a day for a proper deep clean. If you do call the professionals, make sure they provide you with an invoice for the cleaning (some, like ProClean Team, will even provide you with a Cleaning Certificate to confirm what has been cleaned) as most of the time your landlord or agent will require this.
