I very much like the idea that we need to “ build up robust responses to unpleasant situations.” I see this as one of Tolstoy’s central themes throughout the book. I also think Tolstoy is inviting us to redefine what we consider to be pleasant and unpleasant as he continues to tinker with his formula for happiness.
