I want to reflect for a moment on the great writing in today’s chapter. Even though I’m not sure what a “magic lantern” is, Tolstoy creates magnificent imagery as he describes how Prince Andrei “suddenly saw those badly daubed pictures…now in the cold white daylight of his clear perception of death.” The entire passage is brilliant.
