The Generals really don’t represent much of anything. They can’t predict outcomes or forecast events. Even the actions of the solders are random. Yes, Tolstoy points out that they retreat under fire but they might also hold their ground or advance and it all depends on innumerable tiny actions which co-mingle and form new actions. This seems plausible if you buy into Tolstoy’s general theory about the movement of history.
