Situation

You recently faced a setback and things didn’t go your way… or as planned. You’re feeling a bit defeated. Recognize it, let it pass through you and go again. One setback (or two or three) does not define you. It’s what you do next that is most important.

Pattern

1. Accept it.
So it didn’t go your way. It’s ok. Accept your feelings and work through it. It’s not always easy to do but work through the emotions in your own time. Also recognize that in order to win some you do have to lose some. It’s all part of the process.

2. Pivot your perspective.
Even if just a mental exercise, look at what happened from another vantage point. Taking an entirely different view can shed interesting light on your situation.

3. Make a plan.
Perhaps a do over, perhaps a new direction. It’s really up to you. Digest what you’ve learned from the setback and make a plan.

4. Do the work.
Get up and do it again. You need to put in the work and stay focused on making progress. It’s the progress that really counts. It might also take you multiple attempts to get to where you want to go… so let that be ok.

Why

Learning involves setbacks and setbacks make us stronger. Pick yourself up, do it again. And again. And again. You will eventually master what’s in front of you. And by the time you master what you face you’ll be stronger… and likely already onto your next challenge.
