Thriving Regardless Of Environment
A Situational Pattern.
Situation
It can be easy to get caught up in the environment which surrounds us. When things are great you feel elated. But, when things get tough not so much. If you want to thrive regardless of what’s around you, follow a few simple steps.
Pattern
1. Articulate your goals.
What goals do you have regardless of your current situation? Where have you been? Where do you want to go? What type of experiences will challenge you and help you to grow? Identify goals that are beyond any situation be it personal or professional.
2. Adopt beginner’s mind.
Regardless of your situation, approach the experience with beginner’s mind and identify what things you can do or learn that will help you achieve the goals you set in the prior step. Even if you’ve done something a million times at work, there is likely something new to be learned the next time you do it.
3. Embrace the dance.
Recognize that the environment around you is distinctly different from you and your goals. I like to visualize these as two distinct dancers dancing on the same stage. One is you and one is the environment. Sometimes they are dancing close with tons of harmony while at other times they are at odds. But they remain connected together on the same stage dancing. And every move teaches you something new.
4. Remain focused on your goals.
Don’t let the two dancers fuse into one. Keep them separate and keep focused on your goals. In the end you’ll stay true to yourself and steadily focused on your goals.
Why
Without separating your internal goals from the environment you find yourself in, you’ll continually be up or down because environments fluctuate. But you can thrive by simply articulating your goals and then continually working towards those goals regardless of environment.
