if the professor was simply too busy to take on an independent study, it would be appropriate action to either not accept it in the first place, or to be accommodating to the fact that an independent study is impossible to complete without any form of communication or meeting for 10 weeks, rather than to blame it on a student’s “emotional challenges”. It’s not email. it’s an issue of time commitment and care for one’s students.
