Minoan Bull Rider

dust

swarms around the bulls thick-

ly muscled body my

life is centred in the space between its eyes

every atom of life

dependent on my

speed and its surprise but I

can feel it now too much of a

pause

its eyes its eyes its size its size hoof

hit the ground hoof hit the ground run

little man stay little man nothing

is transparent anymore the earth is

full of weight and I

am full of heavy depths and the bull is not just

incidental to my athletic glory the bull is in fact

my mortal enemy dust

swarms around the bulls thick-

ly muscled body my

life is centred in the

space between its eyes every vestige

of courage I have left in me is

focused focused focused on the jump

on the scaling down

of animal and heartbeat

the conquering of gravity: I will

jump over its back

barely touch its hide

turn twice in the sky

weightless like light

hang for a second

in partial transcendence

land

I will

live
