Keeping cargo hauling shipshape

RightShip disrupts traditional ship-vetting industry with analytics in the cloud

To help customers in the maritime industry assess cargo ships for risk, RightShip developed its Ship Vetting Information System (SVIS), a custom-built platform for analyzing vessel data.

The predictive platform improves upon the business’s previous assessment model by assimilating a vast range of diverse data sources and incorporating the most relevant risk factors.

After successfully using the SVIS for more than a decade, RightShip Program Manager Bryan Guenther saw an opportunity to further differentiate its service from competitive offerings.

“Our industry had bumped up against a technology ceiling,” says Guenther. “We wanted to look at new technologies and move to the next level.”

In addition to new analytics tools to enhance RightShip’s assessment model, Guenther needed a high-performance global delivery platform for the company’s service.

“I didn’t want to get into hardware ownership,” he says. “And we needed the flexibility to bring up servers and bring them back down as needed.”

Teaming with IBM to create a sophisticated risk management solution based on IBM Cognos and IBM SPSS software, RightShip assessed cloud offerings that included the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform before determining that SoftLayer technology provided the optimal hosting environment.
