Enugu State, located in the South-East zone of Nigeria, is home to a number of towns. This state is bordered by Benue and Kogi states to the north, Ebonyi State to the east and southeast, Abia State to the south, and Anambra State to the west. Enugu State gets its name from its capital city, Enugu, which was originally called Enugwu-Ngwo before being renamed in 1928.

Enugu State is the 29th largest state in Nigeria in terms of area and the 20th most populous, with an estimated population of over 5.4 million. Geographically, the state is divided between the Niger Delta swamp forests in the south and the drier Guinean forest-savanna mosaic in the rest of the state, with some savanna areas present as well. The Udi-Nsukka Plateau and Ekulu River are notable geographical features in Enugu State.

Historically, the area that is now Enugu State has been inhabited by the Igbo people for many years. It was a part of the medieval Kingdom of Nri and later the Aro Confederacy, until it was defeated by British troops in the early 1900s. Afterward, the area was incorporated into the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and eventually became a symbol of anti-colonial resistance following the 1949 massacre of striking coal miners in the Iva Valley.

During the Nigerian Civil War, Enugu State was a part of state of Biafra. However, it was later captured by federal forces, leading to the reunification of Nigeria. The state went through several changes in its administrative divisions, with Anambra State being formed in 1976 and Enugu State being created out of it in 1991.

Economically, Enugu State is driven by trading, manufacturing (especially plastic manufacturing, with recent investment from China), services, and agriculture. The state is known for producing yams, rice, cocoyam, oil palm, and cassava. Mining, particularly coal mining in the Udi Hills near Enugu, used to be an important industry. Enugu State is considered the heart of Igboland, the cultural region of the Igbo people.
