What’s up with the pop music these past few weeks?

Pop these past few weeks have taken me by storm. Pop music is generally not my thing. While I am someone who likes to listen to lots of different types of music, pop for the past 5 or 6 years (maybe more) has just not been my thing. Most of my listening is made of pre 2k10 rock, and the occasional hip hop album. Not to say I dont like other music i just rarely listen to anything else.

Then 2017 comes round. Apart from the Harry styles album and Lorde’s sophmore nothing peaked my interest. However a few weeks after those two albums, when my summer holidays began I started to notice myself enjoying the the top 40 stuff on the radio which i usually just zoned out.

Here’s a list of all the pop ish songs that I didn’t think I would like, with a little run down of my thoughts.

Desbacito: kind of inescapable, and while i dont like that i dont mind it, because a lot of the lyrics sound pretty stupid and haphazard its hard not to enjoy this song.

Beleiver: Imagine dragons have made a lot of stuff which im just lukewarm with. This isn’t to different but it charted pretty high and is still some good quality rock.

Attention: Charlie Puth has always been hit or miss for me but this is without a doubt my favourite song by him. The goddamn bass line on this song has such a nice groove and the texture it creates with Puth’s falsetto is just really satisfying to listen to.

Nothing holding me back: Probably the only Sean Mendes song I like, but I really love the chorus on this thing. He also isn’t annoying on this like I usually find him to be.

Havana: This is by Camila Cabello of fifth harmony and as far as Im aware it didnt chart too well but the beat on this thing is super chill. But what makes it is the trumpet… That frickin trumpet which tames the melody near the end is so… just… just listen to the song. Its probably my favourite song on this list.

Sorry not sorry: Frickin Demi Lavato... Ugh… I don’t know what it is but for some reason I never dislike any songs i hear by her eventhough they are so similar to other stuff which i deteste.

Instruction: Didn’t chart very well as far as im aware but goddamn it Demi Lavato again.

The one/wild thoughts: Not big fans of either of these DJ Khaled songs but I mentioned them because i dont dislike them either and I’m just trying to show here how strange I’m finding my lack of distaste for current pop songs. I may not like these but I sure as hell don’t dislike them.

Strip that down: Really bouncy and vibey song. Not much else to say.

Slow hands: I would hate this song if not for the groove that the bassline brings which makes me love the song.

That’s what I like: Bruno Mars has figured out how to just keep pumling hits out. Dunno who’s idea it was but the old school hip hop influenced hype style kinda songs like this and 24k magic is just ridiculously fun and contagious.

Something just like this: Dont usually care for edm but when a drop is good I do enjoy it. I also love guitars and guitar solos. What if a guitar solo and good drop happenned at the same time? That’s this songs appeal.

Reminder: I pretty much always like the weeknd’s stuff which become hits.

I know not all of these songs are still relevant, and that for a lot of them i said i liked most of the artists stuff; but the point I was trying to make is that I have not liked these many pop/charting songs which were released withing a small period time like this since… well… ever. And even with that said I know I’m missing some songs released within this time frame. Whatever.

Side note:

While i love music more than most things in life its not something i put too much effort into analysing i jsut sorta take whatever without much question, if you are however into television or film and would like to hear my thoughts on things in those fields (fields which i feel much more confident in my analysis of) then check out the my youtube or soundcloud where I talk about those sorts of things in video or podcast form. Again under the name Icarusanalysis.
