For myself, the only thing in life worth striving for is Good Character, and I have spent the best part of my life trying to build it. Without it, one is worth nothing. My friend Chris Chenoweth sent me this of what Abe lincoln said. I try to follow this in my own life.

Abraham Lincoln said-

“Character is like a tree and reputation like it’s shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing. I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end, when I come to lay down the reins of power, I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside me.”

No matter what happens, no matter what appearances are, I cannot afford to let up on this. As long as I strive and continue to conduct all my affairs with Good Character, I will win.

Here is more from my friend Christopher Chenoweth:

Columnist Dear Abby wrote,

“The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.”

Character is one of the greatest things you should work on constructing within your own soul. It is one of the greatest influencers of good for all of humankind. Its shadow casts a grand example of what is right and good.

Everything good that we see in life is built on the character of good humans doing the will of God. When we seek to live each day with discipline, honesty, and faith, at least two things happen: we are truly following God, and we are making a habit of treating people the way that God would want us to treat them.

Living a life of integrity isn’t always the easiest way, but it is the right way.

Character is built in the sum of the every right decision.
Character is built in the sum of every honest word.
Character is built in the sum of every noble thought.
Character is built in the sum of every heartfelt prayer.
Character is built through repetition of honesty, honorable work, generosity and humility.

Your character is a very precious thing both to you and to others for whom you are an example. When integrity becomes a habit, character is fortified and strengthened.

It is the character of great men and women that build our world and our future. When character is set aside, it causes the destruction of the workplace, companies, and the home. When character is set aside, it causes the destruction of the soul.

Often I have counseled people that were so busy in their schemes to get ahead that they have forgotten about the most important thing in life, and that is character.

In the end it is all about who you were in life. In the end it’s not about what you built outside of you, but what you were inside of you. This stands the test of time and lives forever in the memories of people that will remember you as an example of a person of great character.

It isn’t the easiest thing to tell the truth when dishonesty seems much easier in the temporary moment. The truth of character lasts. t isn’t the easiest thing to do the right thing when no one else is looking at you but your character will shine because you do.

Helen Keller has said,

“Character can’t be developed in ease and quiet. Only through trial and suffering is the soul strengthened.”

People that do the right thing are rewarded by God in spiritual ways. I believe every time you rise above your former self, character is built.
