#Eurovision and the end of b*ullSh*t

Salvador Sobral winning the Eurovision meant so much more than a beautifully written, composed and interpreted song. It so deserved the big and fantastic win, for the very real and musical artistic gold. But it won so much more than for it’s musical brilliance. It won for the global cry out there is to talk the talk and walk the walk. It won for honesty. It won for truthful vulnerability. It won for unscripted, straightforward and fearless talk. It won to end complicated voting systems. It won to let people know that his and following generations will pick and choose their paths and careers in ways that are meaningful to them and not necessarily to be loyal and to ‘fit in’. “Will you be competing in the Eurovision again next year?” Salvador simply responded, “No.”.
Pretence-Complicated needs to be Eliminated. Now! Eurovision has gone down in history as the most viewed live broadcasting tv show ever. And probably, over 3/4 of it’s viewers don’t actually understand the voting points system. : “I don’t understand how the voting system works and it wasn’t until somebody from the team said that I had won that I actually knew Portugal had won Eurovision” — was something along the lines of what Salvador Sobral said last night. Doesn’t this remind you of something else that rather needs a reform — US elections anyone?
Forced Diversity. Diversity was this year’s Eurovision theme. It was diverse for quirky things — just like a normal day out in London, UK. You think you can force diversity? Think again! Diversity isn’t a bumper sticker. You don’t even need to say it, you just need to simply accept it. Accept it without even thinking about it. That, really is diversity.
Luísa Sobral’s song hit the nail when, as a young sleep-deprived mother, she wrote it on the verge of the deadline and, as a singer herself, she wanted to be able to feel it’s as much hers as it is the interpreter’s song. So, naturally she wrote it gender-less. But without thinking or let alone planning it. She just wanted to have a chance to sing it herself one day. Sheer old fashioned, nonstrategic, pure genius!
