Scientists Need to Stop “Othering” the General Public
Jessica Pelland

Folks don’t listen to scientists, not because scientists have “othered” the general public, but because we live in an age where everyone’s opinion is as good as everyone else’s opinion regardless of education and credentials. This breaks down when we want our computer fixed, but if were talking about topics that are politicized, then we feel little obligation to respect the opinions of experts if their opinions differ from our own deeply held biasses. I would argue that scientists haven’t “othered” the general public enough and that special interests have gone out of their way to discredit legitimate science & scientists.
