A study published in retail magazine Dagens Handel shows big changes to be expected in the Nordics. The adoption of mobile payments including Vipps in POS is the new cashless trend in the surveyed retails stores which expected to quadruple in popularity in Sweden and double in Denmark, Finland and Norway by the end of next year. A new solution from ID24 for any POS is now out to make this easier and meet market demands for Vipps in POS.

BSc graduates Henrik Bodén and Karin Bengtsson at Uppsala University have together with ID24 conducted a two-month-long study of mobile payments as part of their bachelor thesis during 2019. We reached out to the 100 largest retail chains in the Nordics. 68% of the companies shared their insights and the results are quite exciting for the tech-savvy generation.

- I recently came back from my exchange semester in China where payment cards are rarely used and everything is done with your phone. I found these results very positive, says Henrik Bodén, BSc student at Uppsala University.

Large retail chains embracing Vipps in POS and also the MobilePay / Swish equivalents in 2019/2020

At present only 11% of surveyed retail chains in Sweden have a centralized solution to accept Swish in POS, while the number of retailers in Finland, Norway and Denmark accepting the equivalent Vipps / MobilePay is slightly higher, at 29%. However, Swish, Vipps and Mobile Pay are growing in popularity in the Nordics. About a third of the surveyed chains are planning to adopt them in 2019 / 2020, 34% in Sweden and 27% in Denmark, Finland and Norway. Together with the chains already offering these solutions, Sweden will likely see about 45% of chains accepting Swish in POS before the end of 2020, whereas 56% of chains in Denmark, Finland and Norway are expected to accept Vipps in POS and MobilePay as additional cashless options.

ID24: Enabling new ways to accept Vipps in POS and MobilePay / Swish equivalents

Swish supports many different ways of payment, like typing a recipient’s mobile number manually into the POS, scanning a QR code, and now also a Bluetooth wireless transmission. There are thus many ways how to implement a Swish in POS solution today. As a Swish partner, ID24, has just released new modules in its second display solution to accept Vipps in POS and also MobilePay/ Swish payments on customer-facing screens. This can run on any customer-facing tablet or POS monitor.

- We are adding new modules so the 3000 screens we support can easily accept Vipps in POS, MobilePay/ Swish as new additional ways of payment. This gives more options to retail chains, especially those with older POS systems, says Stephen Mifsud, heading the mobile payment development at ID24.
