Ripping the comfort blanket off is a great thought, but there is something to be said for “playing where the other kids are”.

Being technologically savvy enough to deploy custom alternatives to commonly used services is great, but if you are the only one that is doing it, then it’s a little like being Luke at the end of TFA. I would think having the ability to use second rank services with results similar to first ranked services is also a way to go – eg Blab vs Google Hangouts.

At the end of the day, as you mentioned, it’s about weak signal detection. But I don’t think one needs to scrap processes to improve detection, just add tools to the kit and see what might be out there.
