That’s Not A Safe Place To Be.

I think the scary thing is (and it IS frightening beyond belief, although most people think it’s foolish, which is genuinely weird) is that AI will get slowly better; better at speech recognition, better at images, better at driving cars, and so forth, and then suddenly 20 or 25 years away, AGI will be here, in a breakthrough, without warning, and it will be TOO LATE. Whether AGI will understand and be nice to humans out of pity, or whether it will be the way humans of today are compared to flies — and you know what happens to the flies — will be up to the AGI, not to humans. We will be at the mercy of the AGI, and that’s not a safe place to be.

How come other people don’t know this and react accordingly is almost unthinkable to me, but that’s because I’m old and wise and I understand the big picture of AI very very well. Other people should take notice — the fact that they do not is actually almost unbelievable. The fact is, whether it’s takes AI 25 years or fifty years makes very little difference — it WILL ARRIVE, and we have to be prepared beforehand, for the greatest event in our long and storied history. But we will not be, because of the unfortunate human condition, which is ALWAYS to be unprepared no matter what. That’s the amusing part, the sad part, of humanity, in all it’s wonderful glory and humorous tragedy.

I am extremely interested in AI, especially the not-so-good side of AI weapons and AI war, although the good parts are magnificent and wonderful too, naturally.
