2017 IN REVIEW: MY YEAR OF NEW BEGINNINGS

This is my first time ever writing a year in review article. The idea to write this was birthed when I read the reviews written by two of my mentors, Ire Aderinokun and Prosper Otemuyiwa on Medium. I would be telling a very big lie if I said 2017 was like every other year for me.

It was an amazing and exciting year filled with a lot of wonderful memories and opportunities. I learned a lot of new things, contributed more to the tech community, and met so many people that have affected the work I do positively. It was my best year yet because I started to earn money for the work I did. Boy did that feel so good! Paying all my bills, here I come!

FAILURES
I am kicking off this review with my major fails this year which include: -

  • Getting kicked out of the Hotels.ng internship in January. (I re-applied later in the year and came out with success stories 💪. The organizers didn’t know what hit them!)
  • Starting projects and leaving them unfinished. You know the usual “ I’m starting something out of excitement and then I’m starting another thing almost immediately after out of excitement and so on, without ever finishing any of the previous ones- because I can always do it later” scenario. When the year rolled to an end, you can imagine my shock when I saw the amount of unfinished work I had accumulated. I could pin this on the fact that twenty-four hours was simply too short!!! This was a classic “so much to do, so little time” situation (if you ask me).

SCHOOL
At the beginning of the year, I was in my fourth and final year at the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Cross River state, Nigeria as a Computer Science undergraduate. I was able to successfully complete the program at the end of the year, thank God! So in other news, I am officially no longer a college student and I am available full time (hint, hint). Lol!

INTERNSHIPS AND PROJECTS
2017 was a good year for me, internship wise. I applied for and was successful (and unsuccessful) at the internships and projects that I managed. During the course of the year:

  • I joined the Andela Learning Community (ALC) Program in April where we were attached to an online Udacity course. At the end of the program, I passed the pre-requisite exam to earn a Google Certification in Android development. Yay!!! This was one of the highlights of my 2017.
  • I applied again for the 3rd edition of the Hotels.ng internship in August. This time around I wasn’t there to play! I was successful and was able to last till the end. I was one of the active contributors to the development of the Hotels.ng android app which is available for download on Google Playstore. At the end of the internship, I was one of those selected to be a part of the management and maintenance team for the app which i’m still a part of till date.
  • In November, I applied to be a Campus ambassador for Ingressive Tech Community. I was selected and I led the Ingressive team at CRUTECH, other members of the team were Aghedo Femi and Joseph Bassey. This was the first time CRUTECH was hosting an event of this nature and I was glad we were able to pull it off (I wrote an article about the event and put it up here on Medium).

TECHNICAL WRITING
One of my resolutions in 2017 was to start technical writing and i began doing so in February. I was able to write a couple which include:

In December, I was accepted as a Guest Author at Auth0 where I write android-related articles for publication on their blog.

SPEAKING AND COMMUNITY
I spoke for the first time ever in a technical event at the CRUTECH Ingressive event where I gave a keynote on; “Growing as a software developer through Communities”. I was uneasy when I started off but thankfully, the feeling passed after sometime. I hope for more of these, as I am starting to get a hang of this public speaking thing.

In December, I became an Andela ALC Facilitator for Calabar, Nigeria. My work there involves helping beginners in the Andela Learning Community (ALC) 2.0 get started.

EVENTS ATTENDED
Last year I was able to attend some notable tech events which include:

  • GDG DevFest for Southern and Eastern Nigeria at Aba, Abia State, Nigeria in November.
  • CRUTECH Ingressive Community which held in Calabar, Cross River, Nigeria in November too, which I also had the privilege to organize.
  • ALC Career Fair, which held at Lagos, Nigeria in December. The cost of this trip was taken care of by Andela because I was a graduate of their Learning Community program.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

I was able to hit 505 reputations on StackOverflow 🙂. This means a lot to me.

WHAT ABOUT 2018?
I am so excited for this New Year! I graduated from University last year so I’m excited at the opportunities, challenges and adventures that are out there. I plan to continue on the path I followed last year. I plan to travel to more places, give talks on more challenging topics in the android community ,earn more Stackoverflow reputations, attend and speak at more tech events and contribute to the open source community. 2018 is definitely going to be better! Cheers!!!
