In a deep dilemma between strictly following the ways of his custom or adopting the ways of the western world, a young and educated Obi finds himself making huge mistakes both in his personal and professional life. Chinua Achebe’s no longer at ease vividly depicts very thought provoking situations in Nigeria in the 50’s, which of course are still prevalent in present times, most of which were issues related to the clash between love and culture, the struggle to maintain ones morality in the peak of hardship and the struggle to find ones identity in an almost fully westernized Nigeria. The strongest theme to me in this book has to be ‘change’ the popular saying ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ surely triumphed here, and I was very disappointed at that, however these are real situations which occur every day so one can’t exactly hold it against the writer, we can only continually praise Chinua Achebe for reminding us and making us think deeply about these situations that shaped us into who we are today.
