A t its flagship store in New York City, H&M has just set up “Voice Interactive Mirrors” that are able to recognize faces. Along with face detection, the mirrors offer style advice, selfie opportunities, and even discounts.

In addition to helping customers, the Voice Interactive Mirrors are also helping the store. They have made it much easier for H&M to connect with customers even closer than before, and make sales as a result. The mirrors personalize the shopping experience and prevent inventory pile-up that has been forcing H&M stores to mark down items in order for them to sell.

The tech-enabled mirrors were created by Microsoft, Ombori, and Visual Art. They are located on the floor of the store, and offer voice assistance to customers in need of help or advice. To interact with the mirror, customers must hold their phone camera up to the mirror to access the QR code. From there, either a discount or a selfie is delivered. The selfie is displayed as if it were a magazine cover.

Other retailers are taking note of digital shopping assistants like these and planning to incorporate them into their stores. Interactive displays have been very convenient for customers to use for style advice, price questions, purchase decisions, and more.

Artificial intelligence offers customers a kind of one-on-one assistance that a regular employee would not be able to provide. The facial recognition aspect alone is a huge deal. While one employee can remember maybe 10 or 20 regular customers, an artificially intelligent device can recognize thousands. The interactive mirrors in the H&M flagship store are surely drawing people in, and more importantly, giving them a unique shopping experience that they will not forget.
