Start-ups and cities: Why governments and public sector should care
When we think about start-ups we may automatically think about the silicon valley and highly data and tech skills people trying to make a billion dollar company or to come up with some idea that leads to wealth and freedom from traditional corporate carreer. What we may not think is that is a huge opportunity to create jobs and to optimize public sector services. In a world of jobs scarcity and lots of people out of work and also with public sector services peforming poorly with lack of investment and new ideas, we could feed the idea of making a better world while improving public services and putting out-of-work people back on track.
As we grow towards a revolution that may change traditional jobs creation and different work patterns, public sector and governments should take a look in the opportunity that can be created in investing and making it easier to start-ups to grow, focusing not only on jobs creation but also in reforming its operations. Many ideas can come from this, we may highlight;
- Apps to improve public health services like data-driven priorization, region distribution, and others
- Safety and security issues like risk reports, and access to security staff
- Education and science driven by data and region patterns, improving student experience and development
The opportunities are huge in this win-win deal, while optimizing public services and also creating jobs for people. There are some steps that may ease this process;
- Creating a soft legal structure for start-up opening, facilitating the process and register of the company
- Creating specific funding line or lowering the credit cost for these type of company
- Lowering the legal labor obligations for hires, focusing on people that is currently not working or looking for a job
- Gather and create groups of work to entice and develop ideas to optimize public sector services
The main idea or issue that it should be stated is that our perception from start-ups must change to see it more like an opportunity to boost growth and to make better living cities and better services, other just enterpreneurship and generation of wealth.
