Really, almost nobody paid proper attention in the US to that Mexican event.

Author is right by saying: “Removing the drug traffickers forcibly would mean all-out warfare against the cartels, unimaginable levels of counter-intelligence operations, extensive surveillance & undercover work, and a comprehensive purging of large portions of the Mexican government, from the politicians to the military, to all levels of law enforcement. In other words, it would take a miracle.”

Actually, it’s impossible.

The key phrase for understanding why it’s impossible is “comprehensive purging of large portions of the Mexican government”. The cartels are “so powerful, so dominant” because they feed the politicians, which help them to earn money. Nothing can be done, because there is no political will to change something. Mexican people want to improve the situation, but cannot fulfill that. Their politicians can, but do not want to.

The author does not suggest any solution to the Mexicans. It is correct. We can just watch the unfolding of the situation. The most probable scenario for the near future is: the sluggish conflict between the authorities and drug cartels will continue, with occasional outbreaks of violence. The authorities will explain their unwillingness to make an order by caring for the lives of the residents. Drug cartels will continue to make their money and feed the politicians. Innocent people will die in gang wars, get poor and try to leave the Mexico. Someday there will be a denouement. It may end up with peaceful agreement like Juan Manuel Santos somehow made in Colombia a few years ago (which is unlikely in Mexico from my point of view) or with a civil war and collapsing of the country.

I wrote an article about that event too. I tried to look at it in a wider way and called the article “The end of the democratic state”. You can find it here.
