We have successfully finished the new product exhibition at SXSW 2018 and returned to San Francisco. Seven years have passed since we first stepped on Austin ground in March 2011.
As I’m sure everyone has realized, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of Japanese people taking part in the exhibiting in SXSW. And not just that, Japanese corporations and educational institutions such as Panasonic, Sony, Deloitte Tohmatsu, Dentsu, Hakuhodo, Tokyo University and so on are slowly beginning to grow their presence locally and steadily nurturing a community that takes on a part of SXSW’s culture.
Originally, performing in an aggressive and bold manner without restriction and where creativity is necessary in a space with a festival-like atmosphere such as SXSW was something that Japanese people and Japanese corporations were uncomfortable with doing. However, by observing the trade show booths and the performances held at “houses” exhibited by some companies, innovative exhibitions and presentations that defied such preconceived notions were executed each day. …
There is an organic shift from Social Networking to Messaging. This leads to the era of voice-oriented communication text-oriented.
1.Voice communication is the key to messaging
Voice communication is the most intimate, intuitive, and simplest communication. Social Media needed to focus on the difficulties of text communication.
2.A Voice creates trust and harmony
A voice reflects your feeling and it creates trust in people. We cannot start without talking to people/things. If you talk, you can communicate to others to let them understand about yourself. This is the basic way of living in our history.
3.We can talk while doing something else. …
What drives us to start developing new a product?
In case of our “baby” app, the starting point was the “PAIN” — not the kind of pain we feel when we can’t hail a taxi (Uber) or can’t find a place to stay (Airbnb), but the psychological pain when we cannot talk to anyone even when we have an urge to do so.
When I think back, it was a good way to start, starting with my own internal pain. That’s because the opportunities to think about a concrete solution will come every time we feel a pain.
Also, if we think of a pain as an inquiry, the solution for the pain would be the answer to that question. Once we find a solution, that also means that we have found a way to use it and people who want to use it. …
It has been a couple of weeks since our “baby” app’s beta launch, and I am pleased to say that the reactions from our users have been rather positive.
Our intention, aim, and excitement of this new communication has, as far as I can tell, been widely accepted by our beta test users.
I am not good at holding a conversation in English, but I can handle a 5 seconds long chat just fine.
I feel more relaxed and feel that there is more time to think before I react compared to a normal phone conversation.
I cringe at the thought of making a phone call, and I’d do anything if I do not have to deal with the stress of phone communication. …
You can find someone to talk.
1: You can record a 5 second long voice message.
2: Start receiving others’ voice messages. Enjoy the stream of message coming from people around you.
3. Tap the screen. You can send a “ping” to notify them that you like their message.
We are starting the first round of user testing from last week. Please participate!

“baby” is a new communication app that lets you talk to someone, anytime you want, instantly.
We Doki Doki developers were trying to solve the following problem: sometimes we have a nagging urge to talk to someone, anyone, but telephone call just won’t do!
That is because making a phone call can be nerve-wrecking, and it’s hard to tell when to hang up. The urge to talk to someone sometimes grabs you in the middle of the night, out of nowhere, yet making a telephone call sounds like an ordeal if all we want to talk about is silly trifles.
With “baby” app, however, this can be easily resolved! You can listen to other people’s voice messages that they recorded, and they can listen to yours vice versa. Listen to messages recorded by total strangers and find someone whose voice gives off good vibes. …
I am now back in San Francisco. Whenever I come back here from other places, I cannot help but notice how different this place is from anywhere else — the air, the environment, the lifestyle, how people spend their time, and even the language spoken.
It’s obvious, but I am reminded how different our lives can be depending on where and when we are. Say, take people from London in the 19th century, Paris in the 20th century, or San Francisico in the 21st century, and their lifestyles and their “norms” will differ drastically. …
Loneliness is deep-seated in our very existence: this is one of the fundamental propositions in life. The feeling of loneliness plagues us starting at the very moment we are born until the very last day. We as a species are social animal in nature: every one of us has a community to which we belong, and we rely on each other for our existence. We have evolved to rely on others and these relationships to survive, therefore, it is intrinsically impossible to become free of this feeling called loneliness.
Of course there are temporary fixes in order for us to do away with the such a feeling: technologies that decrease our lonely feelings, and methodologies we can use to feel closer to others. Those are, to reiterate, merely temporary fixes. Essentially we have been and we are lonely still, and this poses an interesting challenge for all of us from the standpoint of logic, philosophy, spirituality, psychology, industrial structure, technological innovation, and biology. This is a long standing battle between us and loneliness. …
