I am happy to pay the price of emotional investment and of caring what people think. That to me is an indispensable price of admission for being human. When I am at the end of my life I don’t think I will spend much time thinking about all the precious moments I lost caring. But I will definitely regret the ways in which I avoided passionate connection and kept my expectations low. Good creative work, and a creative life, is about both: following your anarchic sure-self call to the wild and honing a vision that speaks to others. To speak to others you need to listen, to be willing to change, and to care.
