The design process can be different for every design individual depending on the mark of the process but in most cases, it includes

  • Design Briefing — Design brief includes the first interaction with the client.
  • Brainstorming or Mindmaping — Preparing the requirements to form to start the process.
  • Research — Exploring and analyzing competitors.
  • Sketching — Digital sketching or Raw Sketching to put ideas from mind to page or artboard.
  • Grid, Color, Typeface selection— Implementing the required steps.
  • Presentation Preparation — Preparing the selected logo presentation for the client to finalize.
  • Concept presentation— Presentation to the client for feedback.
  • Revision — Making the final change in the Presentation.
  • Final Delivery

Below I am elaborating my logo process in detail with images. Every time a client comes in by dropping an email, via social media DM or by any other medium. I follow the same process for Logo, Branding or Web design/ Development but questions depend on business to business or project type.

Logo Process to achieve a unique logo.

First Interaction

Whenever I got a ping from a client about the custom logo. I make sure first that the problem they are facing in business because of design is because of the logo or any other factors that affecting their business. So I always start with

Why you need a logo?
What are your long term goals?

Once I am sure the client needs a logo and understand the problem they are facing. We Start with a deep discussion of Business and asking questions like what do you want to achieve and where do you see yourself in the next 10 years or other questions related to the business. We discussion on pricing. it can be through email, call, or chat.

A set of questions provided to the client. To understand what are future goals.

Contract

After getting the design brief and discussing the fee I always start with the making of a contract based on the discussion and requirement and send that document to the client for acceptance. After signing the contract & receiving the advance as mentioned in the contract moving towards the research phase.

Research

In Research and analysis phase.
I try to understand the business, Analyzing competitors in the business, research what makes the business stand out from competitors, and what will be the right creative solution for the client.

The research phase may include Research on brand attributes, Moodboard, competitor analysis, and other things. That helps in the design process.

Exploring concepts

The research exploration part starts. exploring every possible aspect of designing and what will be the relevant logotype and colors according to business type. selecting the current typeface and customizing it.

  • Raw Sketching or Digital Sketching: Sketching plays a major role in designing a logo the sketches are done based on the design brief, Research, and Analysis Phase.
    Sketches can be Raw on pencil on paper or can be digital sketches on software.

Below is the Dossier logo design, you can find both the digital logo sketch on the left side and the raw sketch on the right side.

Some times I present the research and sketches to the client to know the opinion and feedback on them.

then I move forward with Griding, Color selection, and a right typeface or font selection step.

  • Logo Grids: Moving forward based on logo sketches for griding to make the logo mark perfectly aligned and correcting the mark according to laws to the universal validation. To Ordering the element inside the logo.

Right typeface or font is as important as the logo itself. so I make sure the typography fits with the brand mark.

  • Typeface or Font Selection: The font adds context to the logo mark and value to your logo. It helps Viewers to perceive information from the Logotype.
    Selecting the typeface

    Customizing according to the mark
    so that the logo and logotype look united together.

  • Brand Colors: The right colors are an important part of designing and branding. so choosing the right color is a must for business and choosing the right one too. there are many types of approaches that designers take to select the color.

Final Delivery

Last step in the logo design process. after receiving the final payment. Providing the final files that are going to be used by the client as well as by designers or the person who will work with the brand. if we are in the branding process then I start working on branding goods like Brand guidelines, letterhead, Business Card, etc.
