DJI Mavic Air is a light-weight, compact 4K drone with a 3-axis gimbal. I’ve been taking videos with it for 3 months now and even just flying is too much fun!

In this article I’ll cover these topics;

  • Why I chose this drone
  • Why with Fly More Combo
  • First thoughts as a drone newbie/virgin

Why I Chose DJI Mavic Air

  • Ultra portable & light-weight
  • Picture quality is great
  • Good price–performance ratio
  • Very easy to fly
  • Idiot-proof

First of all let me tell you that I’ve never flown a drone before Mavic Air so I had to look around which drone to buy and understand the specs of the drones in the market for a while.

I’ve bought it just before DJI launched Mavic 2 and there were more expensive alternatives like DJI Phantom 4 & DJI Mavic Pro. I had to make a decision considering portability and picture quality.

No drone is able to beat Mavic Air in terms of portability. (If we opt out of selfie drone DJI Spark because of it’s 2-axis gimbal). And it is about the half size and weight of DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It can easily fit in your jacket pocket. And I can take it around with me all the time in my 30 lt backpack with my other big camera, Gopro, DJI Osmo Mobile 2 and laptop.

Mavic Air takes 30 FPS 4K videos at 100 Mbps. 60 FPS is available at 2.7K and 120 FPS at 1080p. With it’s 1/2.3” 12-megapixel sensor it takes panoramic photos up to 32 MP. You can also take timelapse or hyperlapse videos with this beauty. Thanks to it’s D-Cinelike color profile after some color grading you can get a professional looking cinematic footage. Although Mavic 2 has a better camera with a larger 1" sensor, it is almost double the price of Mavic Air, which makes Mavic Air still the best option below $1000.

It has 8 GB internal memory which is quite helpful if you forget or have a problem with your microSD card. I suggest you to have a microSD card right away if you buy a Fly More Combo as it comes with 3 batteries which allows you to fly around 45 minutes in total. So that you don’t get to interrupt the flight to transfer files in order to empty the internal memory.

The gimbal works surprisingly accurate even in high wind conditions. It is located inside the drone body and with the clip-on protector you know that it is protected when you are not flying.

The battery life is maximum 21 minutes but actually it can fly roughly over 15 minutes taking into account the time to land.

It has built in intelligent flight modes including tripod, cinematic and active track which help you take smoother shots easily. You can fly it without the need of the remote controller with your smart phone or even with your hands!

It uses 3-D environment sensing, with camera and sensors at front, back and below. And when APAS (Advanced Pilot Assistance Systems) is on it avoids obstacles in front and back. For starter you can also use the propeller guards which come with Fly More Combo in order to avoid hitting someone or something. The controller is very easy to use from the first moment and if you are familiar with game console controllers it helps a lot. It’s hard to crash it as it will come back automatically when the battery is low. But my recommendation would be to fly safe and play with the limits as your experience and knowledge about the aircraft improves.

On my next article I want to write about tips and tricks about flying Mavic Air and also flying with it which means getting on an airplane with the drone. :) I’d love to include your questions too. Feel free to leave a comment below.
