As our technological toddlers grow up and start looking for homes, they go back to what they know: their phones. We have been saying that these children are too glued to their phones for years now. After making this comment for so long, these former children are growing up and entering the workforce. What this reality means is that they now have the money to travel and spread their millennial culture to the world. It also means that they have the money to settle into homes for a little while as they travel.

The rise of mobile apps and websites such as Airbnb have only been a success because of the need of millennials looking for places to stay while they explore the world. Airbnb offers the young, thrill seeking market the opportunity to rent apartments and rooms in houses for short amounts of time. The prospect of staying in a home for a short stay rather than a hotel seems ideal to the young traveler but the older generation is fighting back by making this new reality revert back to their old reality.

In New York City, the most visited city in the United States, law has started to crack down on Airbnb. New York law states that residential dwellings must be occupied by the same person or family for at least 30 days. Therefore, the short stays in New York’s residential buildings that are set up through Airbnb are illegal. Now, the city is starting to fine the people who are listing apartments on Airbnb thousands of dollars. These fines will only increase unless these hosts stop operating. The crackdown narrows down the options of most people who are visiting the city to stay with relatives or in expensive hotels.

My question is: why would anyone want to visit New York for less than 30 days? This city contains little sections of everyone. Whether it be Little Italy, Chinatown, Midtown, or Astoria, there is a place for everyone in this monster of a city. We have any type of food, any activity to do, and any job to do. All you have to do to find where you belong is explore.

Thus, I urge all of us to channel our inner youth, break the mold, and explore NYC. While you do so, you will need a place to live, so here is an alternative to Airbnb: Short Term Rentals NYC.

STR is a resource that catalogs all of the available short term apartments in Manhattan and their operators and has a concierge service for clients who want us to curate their options and set up showings. The website cuts out the work associated with finding and renting an apartment, giving you more free time to explore the city and have a life changing time.

Best of luck to anyone who wishes to have fun without coming to the great NYC.
