Too much talks on robots and that they are bad since people are going to lose their jobs because of them were heard! Unfortunately we learnt to deal with situations like this very badly. Instead of bringing a rational solution we just blame the science and technology, forgetting how they help to shape a better society.
What I am going to write here might not be appealing to many people, yet one shall embrace the fact and deal with it despite of its bitterness. In an ideal society one expects evolution and development and unless you want to take an unusual path this statement is pretty rational. We live and we develop ourself as the time passes — pretty clear I imagine.
People normally tend to take the easiest path though and so they prefer to live on basics rather than working hard and pushing boundaries. Yet as you might want to say there are not equal opportunities for everyone.
So not everyone becomes scientist, doctor, engineer and etc yet they lead towards other jobs such as labouring. Which indeed is pretty respected and as a matter of fact one shall accept that labours are the pillars of our society.
Now with technology being developed one can see that the future of our industries will be highly automated and labours will be replaced by robots. The question is: “Is this really a bad thing?” the answer is No. Taking the earlier statement into account one should have expected this development. The question is, are we ready for it or not?
Lets take our society as a pyramid with labours being in the bottom and elites on the top. Lets only focus on the bottom for now and don’t get distracted by the top of the pyramid (As I would imagine people would go and say “Ahhhh this is all elites’ fault who have money and so destroy the rest of us…”). Now that the bottom of the pyramid is getting replaced by robots, does this mean that our old labour forced is getting vanished? Again, the answer is No.
We can take two approaches here; first being pessimistic and say there is no hope since those with money will get rid of the labours without any responsibilities, and second approach which I prefer is to say indeed this is a good sign that the bottom is getting replaced, since it translates to the fact that our labour force are now going to level up. Indeed one shall look at it as a global shift not only local!
I guess this is the approach which shall be taken if we really want progress and prosperity. Those who are moaning about the issue constantly shall put effort to come up with a way to produce more opportunity for current labours. To make education and welfare more accessible. What we really need to do is to stop blaming and start sorting some opportunities out.
I’d encourage you to watch how Larry Page is going to deal with this:
