Rock Bottom

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2

God has a way of making some of the hardest times in life perfect examples for your future. I’ve been thinking about one time in particular lately that was a big deal at the time and now that I look back at it, it’s obvious what God was preparing me for. At the time it seemed difficult and sad but it was the best thing that could have happened. I also have witnesses of the occasion in case someone decided to lie about it (which someone did).

My dad always thought when my brother was saved that it was because he traded one addiction for another. He thought my brother hit rock bottom to be in the position he is now. He was in such a deep spot that he was grasping onto anything to make his life feel a little bit better and the only thing he could hold onto was God. I think a lot of people think that way about Christ. They think that the only way to receive a savior is if you are at your lowest point. They think that they don’t need the help and that it can always get worse.

I’m here to say that there is no rock bottom. The furthest you can get is Hell. That’s your rock bottom and you are already headed towards that. There is a way to stop you from ending up there though.

“Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.” 1 Peter 2:6

Christ is the foundation. We can stand on Him, that is why He came. He gave Himself on the cross so we can have ever lasting life. That is how much God loves you. He loves you so much he wants to make sure you are on a strong foundation, and what better foundation to be on than the one who created you and knows everything about you? Stop yourself from falling in the pit. Stop yourself from hitting rock bottom (Hell). It’s not too late and you need the foundation now. Why are you waiting? Why would you want to get to the worst spot you can possibly get?

When I accepted Christ I didn’t do it when everything was the absolute worst. I did it when I thought everything was going pretty decently. It wasn’t the best time of my life but I had experienced much worse. We only get one shot at life so why not make it count while you have the chance?

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27

My cousin was suppose to be my best man at my wedding. It was a childhood promise I made with him. I told him that when and if I ever get married I would make him my best man. At that point I was newly saved and didn’t know everything I was suppose to be doing for the Lord. He came out a few days before my wedding and the first thing he wanted to do was drink. I should have known at that moment it would have been a problem. The night before my wedding (around 11:30 that night) he was drinking quite a bit. He said he wanted to be drunk before the wedding and he wanted to get me drunk too.

I told him no, I said I wouldn’t let him in the church if he came there drunk. He proceeded to call me names and I told him that he was being dumb about it. He WAS acting like a child about it. He started cursing at me and he gathered his things and left. He said he didn’t want to be my best man anymore. Mind you this is only hours before my wedding. He took the ring with him and I called to get it back. He obviously wouldn’t answer. My wife called and he gave the ring back to her. He didn’t want to talk about it. That was the moment I understood how toxic and dangerous alcohol can be and how important it was to be an example to others.

See, my cousin was at a low point in his life. He was lowest to the point where he, after that day, completely stopped talking to me over alcohol. He’s on a foundation of sand and there’s a way for him to not stoop any lower. He can’t do it on his own though. We can’t keep ourselves from falling lower on our own. We need the help. We don’t know what we are doing and it’s obvious by the things we deem to be fit or okay to have in our lives. If you take sin over family you are doing something wrong. Seriously think about what is wrong, now look at what God thinks is wrong and strive toward fixing THAT over all. Because I guarantee God will bring up things you never knew you had a problem with.

Get on the firm foundation today and change your eternal destiny. Let God take control. Humble yourself and stop thinking you know better than the one who created all of humanity and everything you have in your life.
